  2. I decided to choose an article from our Upfront magazine, called: "Russia's War on Selfies" (on page 4). This article involves a young man from Moscow, named Kirill Oreshkin. Kirill is known for his crazy yet dangerous selfies, a bold move. Because of a situation like this, the Russian authorities have decided to send a message through launching a "safe selfie" campaign, having to do with 10 deaths in Russia. The main problem with these selfies is that people actually tend to die from them, quite literally. At least 10 people in Russia died, including a 17- year old selfie taker who fell nine floors from a rooftop in Vologda! Another death included a 21-year old who plunged 40 feet off a bridge in Moscow. The cause of this wouldn't be anything specific, it simply has to do with great risk-takers who enjoy taking selfies on high ground. An effect this may have on society may be unsafe, because people may feel inspired, motivated, to go up to high points, and to feel the breeze while taking a picture to capture the moment. This can obviously lead to the slip of a foot, resulting in an unnecessary yet tragic death. This problem can hopefully be solved by spreading awareness towards this situation, along with understanding its risks.

  3. I am writing about the Gun Debate by Patrica Smith. Gun control came up because of the many mass shootings in the US. Two examples of these are the San Bernardino terrorists shootings in California which killed (14) fourteen people and the community college in Oregon that was attacked. Gun control violence covers many restrictions such as what kind of firearm could be used, bought, and sold. This was causing so many problems because the only way we can stop fighting this is by tightening the rules on guns so that innocent bystanders do not die. Somes ways President Obama is limiting guns is by having background checks on buyers.

  4. I am writing about how Malala Yousafzai Seeks to Raise $1.4 Billion to Educate Syrian Refugees. Malala Yousafzai is involved in raising $1.4 Billion to educate the Syrian Refugees, because there are many children that are getting harmed and killed, but the children that are alive, they are not getting educated. So, Malala Yousafzai is helping to seek $1.4 billion to educate them. Also, a 17 year old girl, Muzoon Almellehan, is a refugee, and she is trying her best to learn English, and she wants to go to university.

The refugees in Syria are not well educated, so Malala Yousafzai volunteered to help them. She helped them by seeking the $1.4 Billion by the, U.N. agencies, which are appealing for a total of $7.73 billion to cope with Syria's needs this year, and an additional $1.2 billion are required by regional governments for their own plans to deal with the impact of Syria's conflict.

This particular event happened a few days ago. This event took place in London. Malala was on a call, and she talked about the education in Syria. Then, she came on an interview with Muzoon Almellehan, who is a Syrian citizen. Muzoon is trying to study English, because she doesn’t know how to speak English, and she does not have enough money to go somewhere else to study. So, Malala came on an interview, and she talked about this situation.

The reason why this happened is, because the children in Syria are not educated, need a place to study, and have to be well treated. The war in Syria is so terrible, that the children are very poor, and can’t do anything about their education. The reason behind how this happened is, because Malala Yousafzai wanted to help the children in Syria. She believes that everyone can do something to help the refugees in Syria. To help them to be well educated, and for them to be well taken care of.

It’s cause is the Syrian government. Since the Syrian government is killing its own citizens, and the children that are still alive, have no education, and are not well taken care of. The effect this might have on the society, is that many of the children from Syria might come to United States, and get their education here. Since, they have many diseases, people might get affected by the diseases too.
The problem is that the Syrian children are not getting education, and many of them want to study. The people are also not being treated properly, and are suffering many consequences, because of the Syrian government. For example, Muzoon, she is a Syrian citizen, and she wants to be educated. It can be solved if someone can seek $1.4 billion for the Syrian citizens to help them be educated, and to help them is many other ways as well. Just like how Malala Yousafzai is trying to help them.

  5. The World Health Organization declared the Zika virus and its suspected link to birth defects an international public health emergency on Monday, a rare move that signals the seriousness of the outbreak and gives countries new tools to fight it.

An outbreak of the Zika virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, was detected in Brazil in May and has since moved into more than 20 countries in Latin America, including two new ones announced Monday: Costa Rica and Jamaica.

The main worry is over the virus’s possible link to microcephaly, a condition that causes babies to be born with unusually small heads and, in the vast majority of cases, damaged brains. Reported cases of microcephaly are rising sharply in Brazil, though researchers have yet to establish that Zika causes the condition.

At a news conference in Geneva, Dr. Margaret Chan, the director general of the W.H.O, acknowledged that the understanding of the connection between the Zika virus and microcephaly was hazy and said that the uncertainty placed “a heavy burden” on pregnant women and their families throughout the Americas. She said the emergency designation would allow the health agency to coordinate the many efforts to get desperately needed answers. Officials said research on the effects of Zika in pregnant women was underway in at least three countries: Brazil, Colombia and El Salvador.

  7. The Zika Virus causes birth defects in children and is passed around by misquotes, and lately, its been all the buzz. To help calm the people, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Thursday that the state would now offer free testing for all pregnant woman, whether showing symptoms or not. Hospitals are now rushing to find ways to preform so many tests, for blood tests are expected to significantly expand of blood tests being conducted. These tests take two to four weeks, but tests are expected to take much shorter, only seven days, soon. New ultrasound machines have been added into hospitals as well, because now pregnant woman will be expected to have an ultrasound every three to four weeks, instead of the usual two to three throughout the entire pregnancy. Since the Zika Virus can also be transmitted sexually, so woman have been asked to refrain from having sex, or use condoms if the male has been to an area infected with the virus. Doctors also recommend that women who have been to those countries to not plan on getting pregnant until 2018. The Zika Virus is now considered and international health emergency, and New York State is taking the necessary precautions to make sure travelers are safe.

  8. Recent studies shows that the whooping cough booster may offer only short term protection. The United States stopped using a whole-cell pertussis vaccine in the 1990s and began using an acellular version called DTaP. Five vaccines are given to the patient as a child, and a booster vaccine, called the Tdap, is given to teenager and adult patients.
Researchers looked at 1,207 pertussis cases among children who had had the acellular vaccine in childhood. The study found that when these children got the Tdap booster, it was 69 percent effective after the first year, then dropped to less than 9 percent two to three years later.
A more effective vaccination is needed. But there has not been one that was created. Dr. Nicola P. Klein, co-director of the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center, said that until we create another vaccine that will help long term, doctors should change the age the shots are given at.
It has an effect on us because as the vaccine wears off, an epidemic begins. Every four years an epidemic rises because as each generation gets older, the vaccine wears off. When the vaccine wears off, it causes many illnesses. This can easily be prevented by a new vaccine

  9. Recent mass shootings around the US has opened The Gun Debate on gun control. Because of the recent shootings, President Obama said he will use his power to stem the gun violence. In 6500 block of South Green Street Chicago (Englewood), Illinois. 4 shot in Englewood, 2 shot in Humboldt Park, 1 fatally. Four people including two 15-year-old boys were shot in the Englewood neighborhood Sunday evening and two people were shot, one fatally, in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, Chicago police said. The man was getting out of his vehicle when someone came up to him and shot him in the face, chest and left hand. That happened in Feb 7, 2016, 9:54 PM. The cause of this problem is probably nothing, because shooting isn't something of support, but it will have an effect on the society, because it will make them feel unsafe and scared. The problem is that the law for carrying guns is too open for people. People only need a warrant and they can have a gun on them. The solution would be limiting gun control, or carrying guns.

  10. The Zika virus has affected many countries such as Brazil, Cuba, Chile. Because of this President Obama has asked congress to put 1.8 billion dollars in combat of the Zika virus. The reason for this is, the Zika virus has spread in Central and South America. Even though the Zika virus has not spread in the United States, the President would like it to end in South America. I believe the President is doing the right thing by stoping the Zika virus right back to where it came from, not allowing it to get to the U.S.
